The Sierra of Ecuador or the Andes Mountains is one of the Great Mountain Ranges of the World and we are located right in the "Heart of the Andes". This was our inspiration for Moto Loco and after riding through it you will know why. The North and Central Andes of Ecuador are mostly lush green valleys with the occasional dry and arid areas thrown in. One of the 20,000 foot Snow Capped Volcanos is always nearby and we are usually heading towards one or circling the base during our Sierra Tours. Instead of giving a description of each of our Sierra Tours I'm going to describe the North, Central & Southern Andes and the sites and towns in each area. Then go to our Tour Rates page and pick out a tour that you like with the number of days you have to do it in. |

NORTHERN ANDES North of Quito is the Northern Andes. We start off with a stop at the Middle of the World Monument located on the Equator then a ride through a desert like area before heading up to Lagunas de Mojanda. During the ride the terrain changes to green valleys, sections of Pines and then to Paramo. That afternoon we ride down to Otavalo, home of South Americas largest Indian Market. Nearby is also the Leather working Capital of Ecuador Cotchasqui and the world famous wood carving town of San Antonio de Ibarra. Lots of charming places to stay with our usual place being Puerto Lago a lovely group of cabins located on the shores of the largest lake in the area. Other sites in the area are the Cayambe Volcano "Highest Point on the Equator" and Ecuadors oldest Hacienda where we frequently stay for a night or at least stop in for lunch. There are Hot Springs in this area also in Papallacta which is on the way to the Amazon. Lots of diversity lots of nice trails and bad roads plus the markets of this area are always a hit with the ladys! |

CENTRAL ANDES or the "Valley of the Volcanos!" This area has at least 8 peaks that have Snow on them at least some of the time. We circle the majestic Cotapaxi riding through an area that very few have ever ridden a motorcycle. A stay at the lovely Hacienda Rumipamba de las Rosas will have you ready to go the next day to the Emerald Green Crater Lake of Quilotoa. We may stay at the Black Sheep Inn Run by a great young American couple before heading south to Ambato and the Mighty Chimborazo which at 21,000 feet is taller than any mountain in North America! The lovely Colonial City of Rio Bamba is just to the south. Parts of which look like they did 300 year ago. The touris town of Banos with its Hot Springs and nice hotels is on the road going to the Amazon and is always a great place to stay a night or two or a week or..... It is from this area that we either drop down to the coast or to the Amazon for our Combo Tours or head back to Quito on the Sierra Tours. The changes in scenery and vegetation will amaze you as you make the transition from the Andes down to the Amazon or the coast. Check out Max & Pete a Father & Son Team here in front of Cotopaxi!>> |
